THE STRANGE HISTORY OF THE HURON MOUNTAIN DOLMEN

Michigan has an endless number of things to do. Vacationing in the Upper Peninsula is a favorite. However, many people are unaware of how old Michigan’s history really is. Many believe that the highest point of Mount Huron in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is a Dolmen, a megalithic tomb.

While it was once believed that the Dolmen was dated to the Vikings, recent studies believe the Michigan dolmen dates back to the Phoenicians. That would date the Dolmen to Neolithic ages. It is believed by Rydholm, who wrote Michigan Copper the Untold Story a History of Discovery, that the Phoenicians may have mined ten to fifty million pounds of copper out of the area.

There is much talk and controversy about copper mining in Northern Michigan, including who did it, and when. The bigger question is how old is the Huron Mountain dolmen? Was it Viking or Phoenician? The reason I wonder these questions is that different inhabitants mean different uses of the dolmen. Dolmens are known to be used for tombs or commemorations. But what about ceremonies? Are the rumors of ancient druid sacrifices urban legend? Or are they real?

The Phoenicians were originally from ancient Egypt. This would explain the Egyptian styled tablets and stones scattered across various parts of the Upper Peninsula. It would also explain “Egyptian” settlements in the Great Lake States and Michigan. It may also explain supposed pyramids at the bottom of Wisconsin’s Rock Lake.

WHAT IS THE TRUTH ABOUT THE HURON MOUNTAIN DOLMEN

There is much argument around the dolmen. For instance, how old is the dolmen? How far back do North American settlements date? Where did they come from? How dose one get to the dolmen on Mount Huron? Do you have to trespass onto Huron Mountain Club property on Mount Huron in Michigan to get to the dolmen?

Although there are no solid answers, the fact remains that there is much research that still needs to take place concerning the dolmen on Mount Huron, Michigan. If the Huron Mountain Club allows it.

The Dolman is marked on the peninsula that juts Northward into Lake Superior from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

The location of the Dolmen is on Huron Mountain overlooking Lake Superior. The mountain is located on M-35 near Marquette. Due to most of the land on the Huron Mountain being under private ownership of the Huron Mountain Club, I am unsure if the dolmen is even accessible without trespassing. Rumor has it the private land has security guards.
